Samurai warriors were previously expected to master different weapons. But this was later restricted by the Japanese society members.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Jujutsu to Kendo, among many others, there are various martial arts styles with different techniques today. These types of combat and self-defence techniques, which originally were conceived from martial skills, incorporate various codes and philosophies in every practitioner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practised and loved by many people all around the globe, why not familiarise yourself with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese martial arts? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article gives insights into some of the most well-known <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">martial arts of Japan.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Are Martial Arts?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martial arts involves any or a plethora of combat techniques that are practised for various reasons such as self-defence, mandatory military purpose, entertainment, competition, exercise, etc. There are many types of martial arts ranging from hand-to-hand combats to the use of different weapons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Japanese martial arts, the term Gendai bud\u014d (Judo, Kendo, Aikido, Ky\u016bd\u014d, karate, etc) focuses on self-improvement, while Kory\u016b bujutsu (Jujutsu, Sumo, Swordsmanship, etc) practices martial skills for combats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Different Types of Japanese Martial Arts<b><\/b><\/h2>\n<h3>1. Karate (\u7a7a\u624b)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7774\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Karate.jpg\" alt=\"Karate\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Karate.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Karate-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karate came into existence in the archipelago of Okinawa, Japan at a time when Japanese locals were banned from using weapons. So, they devised a technique called &#8220;empty hand&#8221; to defend themselves. It is definitely one of the iconic and renowned Japanese <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">martial arts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karate is distinguished by its straight, levelled and quick kicking, blocking and punching techniques delivered from a stable stance. This slow-motion martial art often involves light or no contact and helps people fight to defend themselves or attack opponents and defeat opponents in competitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karate is so famous worldwide that many movies and television shows, such as The Karate Kid franchise and its television show sequel Cobra Kai have garnered millions of views.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>2. Jujutsu (\u67d4\u8853)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Jujutsu.jpg\" alt=\"Jujutsu\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Jujutsu.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Jujutsu-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jujutsu, which translates to &#8220;Soft Skills&#8221;,\u00a0 is an ancient martial art from Japan wherein a person, who has a small or no weapon, fights his opponent (either in an offensive or defensive manner) to subdue him. The techniques include striking, throwing, or retraining the opponent and in some cases, using minor weapons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core philosophy of Jujutsu, which is one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best martial arts in the world<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is to exploit the opponent\u2019s weaknesses or force against them so as to not confront them with your own force but rather use their force to counterattack them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, people practise many forms of jujutsu. Be it modern or ancient techniques. In fact, other martial arts such as karate, judo and aikido have many jujutsu methods incorporated into them.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>3. Judo (\u67d4\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Judo.jpg\" alt=\"Judo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Judo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Judo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded by Professor Kano Jigoro in the 19th century, Judo, which can be translated as &#8220;way of softness&#8221;, is a grappling-based martial art. It is one of the most common martial arts practised by people around the world and is a sport loved by many to the point that it has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since 1964.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Judo techniques can be divided into three main parts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nage Waza:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Throwing techniques such as large outer reap, one-arm shoulder throw or sweeping hip throw, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Katame Waza:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Grappling techniques such as cross lock, top four-corner hold or scarf hold, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ate Waza:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Striking techniques such as throat strike, elbow blow, u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ppercut, rear elbow strike, high Front kick, etc. However, due to the damage it can do to the participants, ate waza is not commonly used.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>4. Aikid\u014d (\u5408\u6c23\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Aikido.jpg\" alt=\"Aikido\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Aikido.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Aikido-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practised in over 140 countries, Aikid\u014d is a modern Japanese martial art designed by a famous Japanese martial artist Morihei Ueshiba, who wanted to teach people how to defend themselves without injuring the attackers. Aikido can be translated into the \u201cway of combining forces\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Aikido, the goals of the fitness training include flexibility, the right movement of the joints, controlled relaxation, and endurance. The fighting style in this innovative martial art is focused on achieving control over one\u2019s mind as well as body to apprehend the opponent\u2019s attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the basic techniques of Aikido include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ikky\u014d &#8211; Elbow control (applying pressure to the writs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niky\u014d &#8211; Pronating wrist lock<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanky\u014d &#8211; Rotational wrist lock<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yonky\u014d &#8211; Shoulder control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yonky\u014d &#8211; Elbow control (applying pressure on the elbow)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rokkyo &#8211; Arm Control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shih\u014dnage &#8211; Four-corner throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kotegaeshi &#8211; Forearm return<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koky\u016bnage &#8211; Breath throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iriminage &#8211; Entering throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenchinage &#8211; Heaven-and-earth throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koshinage &#8211; Hip throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J\u016bjinage &#8211; Figure-ten throw<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaitennage &#8211; Rotary throw<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>5. Ky\u016bd\u014d (\u5f13\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kyudo.jpg\" alt=\"Kyudo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kyudo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kyudo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ky\u016bd\u014d, which is also referred to as the \u201cway of the bow&#8221;, is a refined Japanese martial art of archery, with thousands of people practising it worldwide. In 2005 alone, the International Kyudo Federation consisted of 132,760 members. This art requires discipline, good eye-hand coordination, focus and patience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dating back to the 14th century, the archery tradition of Japan was first meant for spiritual training and combat purposes. In Ky\u016bd\u014d, the bows are often exquisitely designed and are an important part of Japanese culture. Practitioners of this sophisticated martial art of archery are known as yumihiki, while the highly skilled ones are called ky\u016bd\u014dka.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h3>6. Sumo (\u76f8\u64b2)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Sumo.jpg\" alt=\"Sumo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Sumo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Sumo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considered by most as the national game of Japan, Sumo is, which means &#8220;striking one another&#8221;, is modern Japanese martial arts wherein two wrestlers (rikishi) fight to send their opponent out of the ring or force their body to touch the ground by means of shoving, pushing or throwing. Japan is the only country where sumo wrestling is professionally practised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As wrestlers fight to see who lasts longer in the ring and who is the last man standing, weight plays a crucial role in this game. Kinjite (illegal moves) include kicking, strangulation, punching, hair pulling, eye-poking, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two most common techniques used by rikishis are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yotsu-zum\u014d &#8211; forcing the other out by grabbing the belt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oshi-zum\u014d &#8211; Gripping the other firmly to force him out of the ring.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>7. Naginatajutsu (\u9577\u5200\u8853)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Naginatajutsu.jpg\" alt=\"Naginatajutsu\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Naginatajutsu.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Naginatajutsu-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naginatajutsu, or simply naginata is a Japanese martial art of naginata, which is a pole used as a weapon. The pole weapons each have a blade attached to them and are wielded as swords. This allows the practitioners to attack with their naginata from long-range and difficult positions, such as while riding a horse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women in Japan practice Naginatajutsu because, during the Edo period (between 1603 and 1867), ladies in waiting were trained to use the naginata. This is not to say that male warriors did not practice Naginatajutsu. In fact, samurais widely used it during the early medieval period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This martial art of wielding the pole weapon focuses on balance, speed and posture. Today, the techniques taught to each student differ based on their level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>8. Kendo (\u5263\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7781\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kendo.jpg\" alt=\"Kendo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kendo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Kendo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendo, which means &#8216;way of the sword&#8217;, is a Japanese martial art of using shinai (bamboo swords), which was once used by samurai. Participants in this sport wear helmets and other protective gear to protect themselves from injury as the purpose of the game is to strike the opponent in the Do (body), Men (head), Kote (wrist) and Tsuki (troat).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a physical and mental sport, kendo aims to mould the practitioner&#8217;s body and mind and develop a strong spirit through structured training. Played between two people, whenever one of the opponents struck, he would shout \u201cKiai\u201d to show their spiritual steadiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two main techniques of Kendo include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shikake-waza &#8211; Initiating the attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oji-waza &#8211; Counter-attacking<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>9. Okinawa Kobud\u014d (\u6c96\u7e04\u53e4\u6b66\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Okinawa-Kobudo.jpg\" alt=\"Okinawa Kobudo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Okinawa-Kobudo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Okinawa-Kobudo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kobud\u014d, which means &#8220;old martial way of Okinawa&#8221;, is a Japanese martial art of Okinawan weapon systems. It is believed that when the Satsuma samurai clan prohibited the peasants from using weapons during the Japanese occupation of Okinawa, the locals became defenseless so they had to secretly make weapons from any tools they could use, such as farming implements and household items.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the tools included tinbe-rochin (shot spear and shield), b\u014d (six-foot stick\/staff), hanb\u014d (middle-length stick\/staff), tambo (short staff\/stick), nunchaku (rope or metal with sticks connected to each end), tekko (knuckledusters), tonfa (handled club), surujin (weighted rope or chain) and sai (a fork-like weapon)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>10. Iaid\u014d (\u5c45\u5408\u9053)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7783\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Iaido.jpg\" alt=\"Iaido\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Iaido.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Iaido-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iaid\u014d is a sword-based Japanese martial art wherein a person wields the katana, a Japanese long sword. The purpose of this practice is for the katana holder to be alert to draw his sword as quickly as possible when he is suddenly attacked. Beginners are usually given wooden stick swords, and many practitioners use the iait\u014d (blunt-edged swords). Shinken swords are used by those who have more experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Iaid\u014d, a lone swordsman wields his sword, adhering to specific rules of movement. The purpose is not to fight an opponent but rather to learn to perfect one\u2019s character through a commitment to martial arts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four main components of Iaido are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nuki-tsuke &#8211; Drawing the sword from the scabbard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiri-tsuke &#8211; Cutting or striking with the sword.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chiburi &#8211; Cleaning blood from the blade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noto &#8211; Putting the sword back in the scabbard.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>11. Shorinji Kempo (\u5c11\u6797\u5bfa\u62f3\u6cd5)<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Shorinji-Kempo.jpg\" alt=\"Shorinji Kempo\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Shorinji-Kempo.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.japan-academy.in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Shorinji-Kempo-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial art introduced by Doshin So in 1947 to teach practitioners self-defence.
