However, the tale of 80-hour work weeks for all is outdated for most modern-day Japanese companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rtoc-2\" ><b>2. Working Hours in Japan Per Day\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statutory provisions in the Labour Standards Act are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playroll.com\/working-hours\/japan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 hours a day, 40 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a week, for those who are 18 years or older.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Required rest periods: not less than 45 minutes where a shift exceeds 6 hours and not less than 1 hour where it exceeds 8 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least <\/span><b>one rest day per week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or four rest days within any four-week period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical corporate schedule runs <\/span><b>9:00 a.m.\u20136:00 p.m.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including a one-hour lunch.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Overtime rules (the &#8220;36 Agreement&#8221;)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employers can only legally require overtime if they sign an <\/span><b>Article 36 Agreement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a majority-representative union or employee representative and file it with the Labour Standards Inspection Office. Working Days in Japan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most companies have workdays from Monday to Friday, making the weekend their days off, thus changing the old pattern of having six days a week.
